The Covid pandemic has shone a light on the various methods of disinfection put into place by businesses and the need for the most effective method. The robots have been deployed in hospitals across the world and have proven to dramatically drop infection rates. 

During the first months of the pandemic, Italy was one of the worst hit countries, the north of the country being hit the worst. Like many across the world, its hospitals were constantly overwhelmed, infection rates climbing daily, with many hospital staff becoming seriously ill with Covid-19. At Gruppo Policlinico Abano in Abano Terme, Padua, six doctors had tested positive before the hospital deployed a  UVD Robot. Since then, there have been no new cases amongst staff and patients.

After using a UVD Robot in fifteen of its operating theatres, The General Hospital ‘Dr. Ivo Pedisic’ in Sisak Croatia, moved its robot into its Covid wards in March 2020. Only one member of staff has tested positive, compared to 37 other employees in other departments.

The robot allowed the hospital to significantly decrease the time it took to disinfect rooms, allowing staff to concentrate on other tasks and created faster turnaround time for surgeries.

In an interview with Open Access Government regarding UVD Robots, Marin Repustic, Director Assistant for Quality of Healthcare for the Croatian hospital stated “I’m convinced that the robot played a very big role in keeping our employees in our infectious disease unit safe from the virus.”

These results are also being seen outside of Europe. In the same article, Dr Chih-Chuan Kao of Tung’s Taichung MetroHarbor Hospital in Taiwan also spoke of the impact of UVD Robots at the hospital. “With the deployment of UVD Robots, the infection rate in our hospital dropped significantly. We are happy to have the most advanced UV technology, enhancing our hygiene standard not only in the OR but also in COVID patient rooms.”

Using ultraviolet light, the UVD Robot can autonomously, disinfect and kill 99.99% of all viruses and bacteria and other harmful microorganisms living on surfaces and in the air. The concentrated UV-C light emitted by the UVD Robots as they drive around has a germicidal effect that removes virtually all airborne viruses and bacteria on the surfaces of a room. The UVD Robot was clinically tested and verified at Odense University Hospital and by independent microbiological laboratories.

After UVD Robots and Blue Ocean Robotics won the SDG Tech Awards 2020 Health category, Blue Ocean Robotics CEO Claus Risager spoke with Sustainary about the impact of UVD Robots on coronavirus and the feedback it has received.
