Like many sectors, law firms faced unprecedented challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. This has included the slowing down of services, lack of clients, staff falling ill or having to self isolate, it has also led to some closures. A report by the Office for National Statistics saw the legal sector made over £2.35bn in May 2020, 12% less than the previous year, and was the lowest-earning month in four years.
The risk of spreading the virus is high, as offices contain complex and hard to disinfect surfaces, keyboards, draws and desks. As law firms cover a variety of specialisms, there is a constant flow of clients visiting. Many firms might have staff coming and going from further afield, even abroad.
Law firms have found that employees are hesitant to return to the office, with firms performing internal surveys it was found that over 70% would prefer to work from home with a number expressing various health and safety concerns.
